True Virtual Smart Card

CVSC Fully Emulates a Smart Card and Reader

Back in 2008 Charismathics integrated the first generation of TPMs into its Smart Card middleware, creating the very first Virtual Smart Card. A Virtual Smart Card uses the secure element in the computer instead of the virtual smart card in a standard Plastic Smart Card.

A True Virtual Smart Card like Charismathics CVSC implements the full Smart Card stack, including a PCSC reader driver, Smart Card platform, and applet or profile down to the protocol level. This ensures security, interoperability with existing applications, and managability.

Charismathics CVSC supports the TPM or the Intel IPT secure element. Both support secure storage of cryptographic keys, secure execution of cryptography, and anti-hammering of the User PIN.

Virtual Smart Cards use the secure element in your computer to securely store cryptographic keys, securely execute cryptographic commands using those keys, and to protect the User PIN.

Enterprise Class Solution

To make full use of a Virtual Smart Card requires the right kind of middleware. Charismathics CSSI is an Enterprise Class Middleware that fully integrates the CVSC into the operating system and provides a standards based interface to applications that use Smart Cards with Digital Certificates in a PKI environment.

CSSI supports Microsoft Windows CryptoAPI and CNG as well as the platform independent PKCS11 (CryptoKI). This ensures the widest possible support for applications and management systems.

Typical applications include User logon to a Windows Domain, TLS Server Authentication, Smart Card redirection for Remote Desktop and VDI, S/MIME email encryption and Email Signing, BitLocker data encryption, FireFox browsing, and most other applications that use Digital Certificates.

With Charismathics CSSI Middleware Virtual Smartcards can be used for the exact same Applications as standard Smart Cards.

Choice of Secure Element

Choose TPM or Intel© IPT

In addition to TPM, Charismathics VSC also supports the secure element that is part of Intel© Identity Protection Technology (IPT). Intel© IPT provides a suite of hardware-based authentication components that can be combined to provide a secure and managable multi-factor security solution. Intel© IPT is available on Ultrabook devices and the latest PCs with Intel© Core vPro processors.

Charismathics VSC support both Intel© IPT PKI and the Protected Transaction Display (PTD) components. PTD enables secure entry of the user PIN to the VSC Virtual Smart Card, offering protection from keyboard keystroke loggers and screen scrapers that can comprimise the user PIN.
